This book tells the remarkable story of the Headley family, three generations of cricketers, each of whom represented their country in Tests. It was a unique achievement and remained a record for several years until equalled by the Khan family of Pakistan.

Of course, George, Ron and Dean Headley had much else to be proud of in their playing careers. George was the mainstay of the West Indies’ batting throughout the 1930s and one of the greatest batsmen of his era, so much so that he came to be known as ‘the black Bradman’. His strength of character and his knowledge of the game led to him achieving another first – becoming the first black captain of West Indies. His success, decency and dignity also made him an inspiration to the black population in Jamaica and the wider West Indies, strengthening their self-belief and resolve in the struggle to end colonialism in the region and move towards independence.

George’s son, Ron, played for Jamaica and the West Indies like his father, but also had an important career in England. He was a key member of the Worcestershire side during the 1960s and 70s, both for his solid and often exciting batting and his brilliant fielding, making a major contribution to their three County championship successes in that period. He also captained the side to good effect on several occasions.

Ron’s son Dean made his name principally with Kent, leading their fast bowling attack to great effect for much of the 1990s. Born in England, unlike his father and grandfather, his success brought him international recognition with the country of his birth. He is best  remembered for his part in a famous England victory at Melbourne

in 1998, but he had many other fine Test performances to his name and would have certainly gone on to further success had his career not been prematurely ended by injury.

All this and more is revealed in this book, which provides an inspiring and long overdue account of this great cricketing family.
